Kaunertal Glacier Ski touring

Various ski tours through all alpine levels and degree of difficulties

The Kaunertal Glacier is not only known for his unique freeride possibilties: The untouched slopes are also worth a skitour. Above 3.000 m, ski hikers find from challenging glacier and high altitude tours to various multi-day ski tours or just easy 1-day tours impressive runs around the Kaunertal Glacier.

By cable car or car, you reach the access of various ski tours comfortably or extend or shorten your favorite ski tour easily.

Passing the red shiny rocks of Fernergrieß and impressive ice falls, the Kaunertal Glacier world present you a unique wonder of nature. Thanks to high altitude, the touring season starts at the beginning of Decembre and lasts til June or July, depending on current snow conditions.

Next to the breathtaking panoramic view to the Swiss, Italian and Austrian peaks, the boardercrossing to Italy will present you an unforgettable tour experience, as well as the crossing of the biggest connected glacial area of the Eastern Alps - the Gepatschferner.

Weißseespitze 3.518 m

Starting point: Mountain station of the t-bar Nörderjoch II, 3.022 m

Ascent: Follow the tracks underneath the western ridge of Nörderjoch to the direction of the mountainpeak 'Zahn'. Cross the ridge and take the direction to northwest - to the Weißseespitze

Difficulty: Difficult (Glacier crossing)

Walking time: around 2h, 496 metres of altitude

Descent: Follow the tracks of the ascent. At 'Zahn' take the direction to the Gepatschferner. In fron of mountain peak 'Rauher Kopf', ski down the descent to Gernergrieß (1.648 metres of altitude)

Glockturm 3.355 m

Starting point: Parking space at Riffltal at the Gletscherstraße (2.300 m)

Ascent: Follow the valley in south western direction. Reaching the botton of the Rifflferner, take the steep track up to the Glockturm in north western direction

Difficulty: Difficult (you may need climbing irons)

Walking time: around 3,5 h, 1.055 metres of altitude

Descent: Follow the tracks of the ascent.

Weißseejoch - Passo di Melago 3.046 m

Starting point: Parking space at Riffltal at the Gletscherstraße (2.300 m)

Ascent: Follow the Krummgampen valley in western direction til you reach the bottom of the first steeper step. Facing the mountain ridge 'Nasse Wand', follow the rising valley in northern direction to Weißseejoch

Difficulty: Easy

Walking time: around 2 h, 621 metres of altitude

Descent: Follow the tracks of the ascent.

Platzerspitze 3.098 m

Starting point: Gletscherstraße - branch to Kaiserberg valley (1.770 m)

Ascent: Follow the Kaiserberg valley in western direction. Directly after the Nasserein Alm. At the end of the valley, turn north, facing the Platzerspitze. After some steep sections, you arrive at the Firn ridge. Leave your skis or put them on your backpack and follow the path for 20 minutes up to the small peak of the Platzerspitze

Difficulty: Difficult (exposed areas)

Walking time: around 5 h, 1.330 metres of altitude

Descent: Follow the tracks of the ascent.
